Peter Roper has been head of mobile brand strategy for Google since 2014. He got there with a plan that he laid out early in his career – not a perfectly detailed set of directions, but a map of the skills he’d need and where he would find them. The key to success, as he told Marguerite Ward for CNBC, is to imagine the job and company where you’d like to be in three years. List out the “chunks of expertise and specialty” that you’ll need to get there, he says – and then figure out how you’ll pick up those abilities en route to your destination.
