How to avoid giving up your salary history

It’s not in a job candidate’s best interest to disclose previous salaries, Liz Ryan writes in a piece for Forbes. That kind of information only improves the hiring company’s negotiating position, yet it can be difficult to tactfully decline the request. She suggests that candidates tell recruiters and others to ask all the questions they want about qualifications and experience and to request an offer based on that information. She also recommends turning the “salary history” question into a “salary requirements” answer. Job-seekers, she says, “are learning that they have more power and influence than they think – but only if they know their own capabilities.”
