Jeff Kauflin read 1,000 cover letters when he led recruiting at a marketing company. Now a staff writer for Forbes, he recently shared what his favourite cover letters contained. The best cover letters should be based on an insider’s view of the company – through research online or, preferably, an informational interview with an employee, he advises. You’ll be searching for two things: First, you want to find something that excites you about the company. Second, he writes, you should identify a problem you can help the company solve. Include both of these in your cover letter – but be subtle about it.
