Ethical conduct is never out of vogue

November 21 2012

What would you do if you were requested to post a sale entry without the proper paperwork?

In this short video Ana is asked to do something she feels uncomfortable about and has to weigh up what to do.

To find the best solution Ana will need to consider the consequences, risks involved and the need for clear performance management data, as well as refer to her code of ethics.

Would you be able to influence an outcome to do the right thing?

As a CGMA designation holder, using your ability to assess the ethical context of every situation is part of your professional commitment.

Ethics pays - for the business and for your career.

This is the first in what I hope is a series of tutorials on the subject of subordination of judgment.  Accountants in industry experience this type of question daily.  If an executive is able to establish a friendly relationship with the juniors that relationship enables the request to simply record the requested transaction based on the faith the junior has in that executive.  Accountants feel pressure about many things, particularly issues that keep them from moving through their workload.  Lack of documentation is something that takes time to resolve and may hold up the month end close.  Holding up the month end close or missing a deadline places a lot of pressure on people and they may opt to follow up later.  Standing your ground is important.
