Who’s winning with Big Data?

The retail industry is moving faster than others to capture the growth made possible by new data collection and analysis technologies, according to new McKinsey Global Institute research detailed in Harvard Business Review. Retail progress in particular may be a result of pressure from new digital competitors. Some successful operations are scooping up not just data scientists but “business translators” who can help the data team find the right questions. The researchers also noted that early adopters are seeing faster gains in profits, “solidifying their advantages.” The next step, the authors suggest, is the deployment of machine learning for everything from customer service to records analysis.
