Even if you’re disciplined enough to avoid every distraction, there’s another threat waiting to ruin your productivity: interruptions. In a piece for FastCompany, Gwen Moran suggests strategies for managing the onslaught of colleagues’ messages, questions, and requests. First, you could schedule specific “interruption hours” where people are encouraged to approach you with questions and requests. Alternatively, set aside different types of communication for levels of urgency, from emergency phone calls to “it can wait” emails. Additionally, physical cues such as polite “leave me alone” placards or even oversized headphones can preserve a couple hours of peace.
